Cheaters, shortcuts, fakes and having no doubts about doing it right May 13, 2009 |

Health-E-News/Harness Your Brain Gain
Manny, MonaVie, Madoff, MLM and MarathonsWhat do they all have in common? Regardless if it be MLB (Major League Baseball) with Manny and steroids, the deceptive world of online weight loss and MLM (multi level marketing), or in the financial markets with Bernie Madoff, my message this month is you always have to be on guard for frauds and fakes. The bottom line: everyone likes to take shortcuts and it is easy to find them "advertised" everywhere. (Heck, someone even had a shortcut sign just before mile 14 at the Boston Marathon to lure runners in to their back yard for a party!) While that shortcut sign was funny and provided a great distraction, I hope this issue helps get you on track. In my May HealtheNews learn how to quickly spot a quack, set smart goals, and sort through the excuses that may be draining your
brain. (Be sure to see my own excuse list too and meet my stroke
hero...)

Are you taking a weight loss product like this one? Please read this complete FDA warning -it may save your life! ExcusesEvery person in this photo had a long listof valid excuses not to run...
Above is a photo of our 2009 Tedy's Team just prior to going to the start line for the Boston Marathon. Tedy Bruschi mentioned a statistic when he spoke to our team that stuck in my brain- it went something like this…
“Less than 1% of all people in this world can say they completed a marathon”.
Bottom Line:
Millions of ordinary people choose millions of reasons why they don’t reach their goals. Here’s just a few of the obstacles (or better yet excuses) that went through my head when I was deciding last Fall to begin training for the 2009 Boston Marathon. Smart-Goals
To reach your goals the first step must be to get clear on what you want to
achieve. In order to reach any goal, the following smart-goals guideline tips
should help. To check if your goals are smart, follow this guide:
SpecificThe reason for being specific is to uncover your true “why”, or ultimate goal as well as the reasons behind it. During your stroke recovery, injury or stressful time in your life you may have gained weight. A goal to lose 10 pounds, for example, is specific, but let’s investigate why losing 10 pounds is the right goal to begin with. If you had more energy from being lighter and could move your extremities easier to exercise them more, would that be more appealing than what the scale reads? Perhaps it is not so much the number (10 pounds) but the increased energy and good feeling that would come from the process in attempting to lose the weight. So, your why for weight loss may really be to make it easier to move your body to exercise for 15 more minutes daily. You may find that the goal itself is now completely different from what it started out to be.
I mentioned last issue I would be featuring a few of the amazing stories of some of the 26,000+ runners to highlight their own path or "why" to Boston to help inspire you. I think it is only fitting that I start my list by featuring my stroke hero for the 2009 Boston Marathon, Jamie Coyle. You may recall Jamie is a young stroke survivor from my home town that I featured in a previous issue of Health-E-News. In short, Jamie is an inspiration to all young stroke survivors and is making great strides at overcoming her own obstacles. She is well on her way to a full recovery and I know with her dedication and her determination to achieve her own goals she will get it done. You should know that along with her mom Sharon, and her Aunt Charlene, Jamie was a big part of "Team Dansereau" that helped me get to the finish line. They even arrived in Boston by 9am to be sure to get a spot at the finish line ! Thanks to Jamie's photo album I can share a few last photo memories from the Boston Marathon here... I'm not sure which was the bigger highlight for Jamie, waiting around for me in the cold to finish or getting as kiss from Tedy Bruschi at the Tedy's Team after party at the Lenox Hotel. Somehow I think I may have lost out to #54, but I'm OK with that either way :)
