It happens every 45 seconds... May 31, 2008 |
Health-E-News May 2008 "Know-Stroke" Issue
Not just in May.....
Every 45 seconds someone in this country suffers a stroke. I know firsthand how serious this disease can be. You may know about my story. Unfortunately, stroke is not always treated like a medical emergency, even though it’s our country’s No. 3 killer and it disables millions of American each year. Many stroke patients still aren’t immediately diagnosed or may not receive the most appropriate treatment and therapies and too often they are left with the debilitating effects of this disease. That's why I have been busy helping others to Know-Stroke this past year. I hope you'll take a moment in this issue and learn all the warning signs.
As "Stroke Awareness Month" comes to a close, please take the time to review some of the articles in this edition to help you identify the symptoms of stroke. Read my latest blog post on why we all need to get together and Know-Stroke here Did you know?Rhode Island's largest hospital is still not a recognized stroke center. MUCH more work needs to be done in this area of stroke advocacy. To find out where a stroke center is in your state to get treatment fast follow this link Here's more on what I've been doing to support Stroke Advocacy on the state level Recognition
In addition to the great phone conversations and emails from stroke survivors, it is nice every once in a while to know other stroke educators think you are on the right path. Thanks to Stephanie Trelogan, Senior Editor for Caring.com for rating my stroke blog as one of her favorites....
Willingness to FailI'm learning there is a secret to recovery from stroke or any other major life problem: Willingness to fail. Willingness to face the facts of what is happening today, and in spite of that, to have the stubborn willingness to continue to press on and perhaps "fail forward*".While I have not yet achieved all my personal goals in terms of making a full recovery from my stroke, I have made significant progress in launching an educational campaign to help others. More on *Failing Forward, why I still need to get to Chicago, and how you can Give a Little Bit in the next edition. Your Comments on this Issue Please
