Adult-Sports-Injuries

Top Ten Adult Orthopedic Injuries

Even though most adult-sports-injuries can be prevented with proper preparation, training and good nutrition-many adults still think they are able to play (and eat) like kids.  Unfortunately, these adult bodies in most cases are carrying extra body fat and are arriving at games or trying to fit in exercise on little to short rest, AND with no time for warm-up or proper nutritional preparation.  All these combined factors make the chances of adult-sports-injuries, or the typical  "weekend warrior" type injuries highly likely.

My Top Ten Adult Orthopedic Injuries

The common thread in most of the adult-sports-injuries I treat in my private physical therapy practice relates directly to extra body weight on the scale.  As you review these top adult-sports- injuries and link to the articles that describe the common signs / symptoms and causes you'll see that top on most of the lists for added risk of injury are carrying extra body weight.
  1. Achilles-Tendinitis
  2. Torn-ACL or knee injury
  3. Ankle-Sprain
  4. Back Strain
  5. Hamstring Strain
  6. Herniated-Disk
  7. Piriformis-Syndrome
  8. Plantar-Fascitis
  9. Sciatica
  10. Shoulder and Neck Pain

For every pound of extra body weight an adult carries on their upper extremity-there is an increase of 3-4 pounds of pressure on the joints of the lower extremities.

Considering the statement above about how extra body weight has a direct impact to added wear and tear pressure on joints in the body it is a shame that the next statement is also sadly true.

Physical Therapists in today's busy practice environments simply do not have the time to make this enormous risk factor (overweight-pun intended) a target for treatment discussion

Patients are certainly not getting good nutrition advice from their physicians today either.  Many are either overweight and undereducated on nutrition themselves- while at the same time are cashing in on the commercial weight loss market by selling a pill solution to the problem.

I've started a credible online nutrition coaching program to integrate this important risk factor as it relates to adult-sports-injuries.  You can learn more about this service by visiting My-Nutrition-Coach.com
